Content Warnings for Silent Hill (1999)
This is a HORROR game, there will be imagery and situations that are considered graphic and disturbing. Yes, this is an old PSX title, but the atmosphere and effects hold up. This includes any gore. Darkness and fog play a huge role in this game, (sometimes you can hear things before you see them).
IMPORTANT!!! As with all my CW pages, keep in mind that by reading these, you may be spoiling aspects of the narrative for yourself. If you're only here out of curiosity, you should probably close the tab. :)
- Body Horror: In general, Silent Hill enemies appear as twisted versions of recognizeable things. SH1 leans more into animal silhouettes and shapes, but there are also humans appearing to be controlled by some kind of wriggling parasite. Mutilated corpses hanging out in various spots is the norm. Depending on which ending you are headed for, you may see a "demonic creature" emerge out of the body of a young woman.
- Child Abuse: There is overt reference regarding harm to point of (near) death. Verbal abuse. Abandonment. Medical malpractice. Severe bullying from other children is also highlighted and implied.
- Questioning of Sanity & Reality: Characters often question what it is they are really experiencing, unsure if their mental state has deteriorated, or if they're hallucinating, or if they're in some sort of limbo.
- Sexual Violence & Pregnancy: Supernatural impregnation is implied, but no physical sex involved. It's more of a "demonic virgin birth" scenario. And that ain't a baby in there.
- Drugs: Implied sales and linked homicides, stash can be found, documents allude to use and desire for them.
- Animal Death: Skinned dog enemies (and occasionally just their parts) are throughout the game.
- Cult: A lot of the terrible things that have happened and are happening in Silent Hill, including the twisted Otherworld, can be linked to a cult active in the town.
- Insects: There are insect type enemies in the game. They're basically oversized, long-legged (but still flat) cockroaches that make a really annoying sound.
- Acrophobia: Especially when the world warps outside, there can be lots of "pits to nowhere" with invisible walls around them.
- Claustrophobia: Some narrow passages aside, fixed camera angles can increase that sense of claustrophobia, so just be aware!
- Emetophobia: Just one mention in a document.
- Self Harm: [see emetophobia above]
- Jump Scares: There's a handful sprinkled throughout the game.
DISCLAIMER: These are the CW I felt were most pertinent to share. For an even more in depth list you can check out the page here.
