Content Warnings for Silent Hill 2 (2001)
This is a HORROR game, there will be imagery and situations that are considered graphic and disturbing. Darkness and fog play a huge role in this game, (sometimes you can hear things before you see them). This game deals with a lot of mental health related issues.
IMPORTANT!!! As with all my CW pages, keep in mind that by reading these, you may be spoiling aspects of the narrative for yourself. If you're only here out of curiosity, you should probably close the tab. :)
- Body Horror: In general, Silent Hill enemies appear as twisted versions of recognizeable things combined with some harder to place, "wtf is that" oddities. Mutilated corpses hanging out in various spots is the norm. There is a moment where a character who you previously met seems to be decomposing slightly even though you saw them, perfectly fine, a couple of minutes before.
- Depression, Mental Illness, Self Harm, & Suicidal Ideation: One of the characters is overtly implied to be suicidal, and the protagonist walks in on them holding a bloody knife. Through this scene, the protagonist agrees to take the knife away with them, to help the other character avoid harming themselves in future, or worse. Throughout the story, it is clear that this character is in the grips of a very deep, very dark personal struggle. Their expression can flip in an instant, and they lash out at the protagonist more than once. There are some documents that express existential despair and desire to die. There is one ending involving implied suicide.
- Child Abuse, Sexual Violence, & Victim Blaming: The background of one of the characters is something you have to piece together through documents and encounters. Physical and sexual abuse is implied. Additional emotional abuse experienced from family members knowing what was happening but choosing to do nothing or suggesting it was deserved. This one is ROUGH folx, but very well-handled. There is a monster design directly based on this abuse. Additionally, there is an unsettling scene involving some of the monsters that is difficult to parse what is happening but often LOOKS like some kind of horrible assault at first. While that's not quite what is actually happening, it is definitely intended to make your stomach turn.
- Murder & Violent Death: Some documents and character encounters deal very overtly with this. There is a character that appears to be murdered repeatedly, yet somehow they always reappear, alive.
- Emotional & Verbal Abuse: People can say and do some really terrible things to each other when faced with their own mortality. Depending on which ending you are headed for, you may see/hear more or less about this and characters may have different reactions to each other.
- Mental Patient Abuse: One of the locations you must explore is a psychiatric hospital. There are documents alluding to the abuse of patients.
- Animal Abuse & Death: A character talks about doing a terrible thing to a dog. Enough said.
- Emetophobia: There's a whooole scene where a character is introduced and they puke basically the entire time. You can hear it before and after the scene as well.
- Coprophobia: This goes along with emetophobia above. The protagonist sticks their hand in a toilet that is full of disgusting, unidentified sludge.
- Disease: From the first scene onward, the protagonist talks about the death of his wife from a long battle with a mysterious, incurable disease.
- Jump Scares: There's a small handful sprinkled throughout the game.
- "Fat Evil": This is an unfortunate trope in the game. Because of the overall package, this tends to get overlooked, (to me, it's clear the character is not intended to be evil because they are fat), but I wanted to mention it. This character also comes from a background of long-standing harassment, abuse, and bullying, their weight being one of the primary targets. This horrendous treatment and desperate desire to have power over their situation causes the abused to become the abuser, and it escalates from there.
BORN FROM A WISH secondary scenario specific:
- Suicidal Ideation: Repeating this here as a character struggles with existential despair and seems to consider suicide, even putting a gun to their head briefly.
- Accidental Death: It's implied a child fell from the attic window.
- Occult: SH2 generally doesn't dip into the occult end of Silent Hill's history, but there's a bit here.
DISCLAIMER: These are the CW I felt were most pertinent to share. For more you can check out the page here (BIG SPOILER WARNING).
